DGMR contributed to the 13th UIC Sustainability Conference, jointly organised by the International Union of Railways (UIC) and Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB.
This conference, that took take place in Vienna, examined both the contribution that rail can make towards delivering the 2030 sustainable development agenda and also how sustainability can give rail a competitive advantage.
Noise calculation
The presentation of DGMR's Hans van Leeuwen focused on the noise produced by trains and the common noise assessment method, CNOSSOS-EU. This method is the new European calculation method for noise mapping.
In this presentation comparisons were made between the existing EU Interim Railway noise calculation method and CNOSSOS-EU Railway. The existing EU Interim Railway noise calculation method was derived from the Dutch Standard Calculation Method II for railway noise.
CNOSSOS
Some of the conclusions are: CNOSSOS is a simpler source model because it uses merely two source heights. In the source model a few more aspects are integrated such as traction noise and curve squeal. In the propagation model, calculations are based on meteorological input such as wind directions. Furthermore, CNOSSOS gives somewhat higher noise levels for reflective ground and somewhat lower levels for absorptive ground.
