Sustainability and health

Future-proof building

To keep the ecological footprint of buildings as small as possible, sustainable solutions are more important every day. Sustainability and circularity are recurrent themes, because they are related to the future of organisations, employees and residents. Having ambitions in sustainability is the first step. But how do you then realise such a future-proof building, in which people are healthier and more productive and in which people reside with pleasure?

Making ambitions in sustainability tangible

Whether it comes to sustainability, circularity or health, DGMR’s consultants challenge clients to involve these themes into the design from the very start. Together, we search for what is possible and feasible. And we translate ambitions into eg BREEAM, WELL or constructional solutions. We like making the ambitions in sustainability as tangible as possible and go about this with an integral and innovative approach. We can rely on our extensive experience in sustainability consultancy.

More information about sustainability and health

  • BREEAM

In more and more construction projects, we advise on BREEAM certification. DGMR’s consultants act as BREEAM expert or assessor for new construction and In-Use. We are perfectly capable of guiding the certification process, because we were at the cradle of BREEAM in the Netherlands. And we still participate in advisory groups at the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) in refining the development of this method.

  • LEED

We see that LEED is requested more and more as an assessment method in the Netherlands. Particularly for internationally oriented, listed organisations or for example for airports. As LEED Accredited Professional, DGMR has broad and thorough knowledge of sustainable construction and the application of the LEED systematics. DGMR has extensive experience in the guidance of prominent projects and in realising high ambitions in sustainability.

  • WELL

The health in buildings has become more and more important to building owners and tenants. But how do you know if a building is healthy? And how do you improve the health of building users? Building proprietors, developers and employers have long wished for a certificate that proves their extra investment in a healthy working environment. WELL satisfies this long-standing wish.

Together with subsidiary BBA Binnenmilieu, DGMR can guide the process of WELL certification. But also in the preliminary stage, we can determine health ambitions and demands. On behalf of Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) DGMR is the first agency in Europe to act as a WELL Performance Testing Organization perform WELL assessments on the health aspects of your building.

    More about WELL

  • Circularity

How do you create a building that lasts fifty years or more, but can just as easily be demolished and rebuilt somewhere else? Or that consists of materials that can all be reused in many different ways? That requires the consideration of recycling from the very start of the design. DGMR’s consultants guide the design team on this area. We look at the feasibility and the application of innovations on the topic of circularity, for the development of flexible buildings that last a long time, by which we prevent waste and demolition.

  • Energy and BENG

How do we get energy consumption as low as possible? This question is being asked not only by building contractors, but also by the government. DGMR consultants are uniquely qualified to answer this question for government, builders and designers. We have been working on energy performance since the early 1990s. We know EPC, BENG and energy labels inside out. Because we participate in the NEN committee for energy performance and develop energy models for the future.

We support clients by devising concepts that combine low energy consumption with a comfortable building. In doing so, we take future regulations into account. Furthermore, we predict energy consumption in buildings through dynamic energy simulations.

  • Indoor Climate

How does a building get a comfortable climate? By looking closely at the thermal indoor climate and air quality. For new buildings, our consultants use simulations to predict the indoor climate in advance. In our advice, we combine the practical translation of the analyses with our years of experience. Sometimes complaints in an existing building are the reason to analyse the indoor climate. We deploy measuring equipment to analyse temperature, drafts, air quality, CO2 and particulate matter. We can then test the results with simulation calculations that substantiate the possibilities for improvement.

To visualize the thermal indoor climate or air quality, DGMR developed the ComfortMonitor. These components are also reflected in DGMR’s ProductiveBuilding app, as they affect employee productivity.

  • Fitwel

Because people spend more than 85 percent of their time indoors, a healthy indoor climate is important. Fitwel focuses on healthy campuses, office and residential buildings. Those who want to invest in a healthy environment, but find WELL too ambitious, get an approach that is more accessible and less expensive with Fitwel. Fitwel focuses primarily on fitness and exercise, food and water, light and views, while taking mental health into account. DGMR has a Fitwel Ambassador who will work with you to see how you can implement health in your building.

  • Active House

Anyone who wants to develop a building with well-being, energy and environment in all areas will find guidance from Active House. This label puts people first and ensures that elements such as energy, environment and comfort are in balance. DGMR consultants can translate this holistic approach to homes, but Active House is also increasingly being used for museums, schools and offices, for example. The label is relatively easy to implement and can also be used as a design tool to make sustainability ambitions visible.
